Aviation has drawn a great attention from the young nowadays and it also faces many conflicting opinions and prejudices from the public, but behind that, like many other professions, are challenges that few people know.
Flight attendants - Reasons for a career option
"Why do you want to be a flight attendant?" This is the most common question asked by the interviewers in the recruitment exams. “I want to become a flight attendant because I admire the thoughtful, polite image and the aura of the flight attendants I saw. Although this job is as easy as pie, everyone always appears in their best state to energize passengers,” said T.H, a new intern at an airline.
It is obvious that who comes to the airport has his or her own reason, but to reach the dream, students need to put great effort because the lack of experience in the service industry is a popular barrier. Students, either have to choose to study to have a good academic record, or choose to work while studying to gain more experience, and trade with their own GPA. T.H also shared: “Besides studying, I also participate in many other activities at school to practice soft skills. Of course we can not miss language courses and flight attendant courses which are the vital key to become a professional flight attendant”.

Lazy people who just enjoy travelling without paying fee?
Referring to flight attendants, it is usual for many people think this is a profession of "eating well, dressing well", traveling here and there and the only requirement is the beauty. However, from the perspective of a person who passed the interview for B firm on October 8, 2022, appearance is not everything because “many candidates have bright, even outstanding looks but still fail as usual”- T. H shared.

The most important factor to being a flight attendant is the attitude to the customers. Therefore, the girl who likes to travel can also become a flight attendant since the nature of the job is to move constantly. But considering other factors, a lazy person can not do the same thing. The job requires numerous different types of challenging works. For example, when everyone is still asleep, flight attendants who wake up at midnight to prepare for an early morning flight, or struggle continuously for 13 hours on the plane to serve passengers on consecutive holidays. In fact, any laziness will immediately affect the KPIs and promotion process.

Difficulties that few people know
Entrance interview of flight attendants is a complicated process with several requirements. However, after passing the selection round, the real obstacle will arrive. “I have read a lot of the hardships of this profession online, but I did not expect the dark sides when it comes to aviation medical. I didn't anticipate the medical fees, and when I arrived I was like, "Why didn't anyone tell me this?" - said T.V, a candidate who passed the interview round of firm B. " You prepared for the medical checks with a very confident mentality and physically, but when you arrived, you were shocked and finally decided to give up your job even though you had passed the first gate".

From the medical examination to the training process, it requires extraordinary energy from students when “Every day, I have to get up from 5 am, prepare carefully for makeup, clothes to go to the training points. I had to spend 8 hours at the training site to learn the knowledge of makeup, first aid, escape and survival at sea..... Real learning, real exams, and trainings taking place in a row” shared T.H.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, the aviation market in the first 6 months of 2022 welcomed 23.3 million passengers, a strong increase of 74.2% over the same period in 2021 and equal to 60% of the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, the domestic market reached 20.8 million passengers, an impressive increase of 58.4% over the same period in 2021 and 12% over the same period in 2019. Therefore, the demand for flight attendant recruitment increased. As noted by us, last October Bamboo Airways held an interview with students at the University of Foreign Languages, Diplomatic Academy and Foreign Trade University.
On an overall view, it is clear that flight attendants become a "hot" job for a variety of reasons. However, as any other jobs in modern world, it has certain difficulties or obstacles that require great effort from individuals to overcome. As T.V and T.H shared, there are many challenges that the public need to be made aware of.
In short, the perspective of the flight attendant profession can change depending on each individual's viewpoint. There will be no common standard or assessment. However, the inevitable is that there is no such thing as an easy job. Looking at the flight attendant profession, many people think it is leisurely and "piece of cake", but this job has challenging and demanding requirements from employers that only those in the field can fully understand. With many fresh graduates full of enthusiasm, being a flight attendant is a dream, a door to a new world.
